CHAPTER 10

I guess I needed to see for myself what had happened to Kyra’s body to fully grasp what the killer had done to her. That meant I needed to go see Colonel Holz for myself, which also meant I needed to head back to Normal.

Dottie was more than happy to take a ride back with Fifi and me. It wasn’t until I’d started to drive up the old gravel road of the campground that she threw a kink in the investigation.

“Now, Mae, y’all don’t need me.” She had the cigarette already tucked into her fingers and rolled the roller of the fluid lighter in her other hand. “Besides, if I don’t get a good night’s sleep, I’m gonna get a pickled liver.”

“Pickled liver?” I laughed. “How will a good night’s sleep help with that?”

She and I both knew a pickled liver was the outcome of unhealthy eating, and nothing but grass and seeds came out of the dining hall at the Forest Bathing Retreat.

“You mean you’ve missed your sweet snacks and crime television shows?” I wasn’t going to make her go back with me. In fact, when she’d jumped at the chance to ride back with me to Normal after she’d asked if we could stop by her camper to grab a few things, I knew that I would end up going back to the rest of the Laundry Club Ladies and Hank without her.

“I need my snacks. I’m as weak as a gnat.” She’d put the cigarette in the corner of her mouth and used her hand to spiff up the tight curls the pink curlers she’d worn overnight had left around her red hair.

“Who are you getting all gussied up for?” Again, it was another answer I knew but wanted to see if she told me.

“If you must know, I might just get a pho-to-grapher to take some shots of me and Henry for the upcoming competition.” She tried her hardest not to look at me, but I could see her eyes shifting to the corners to get a look at my expression. “And it ain’t right to have Henry come all that way to the tree rubbin’ place so we can re-hearse.”

Dottie had a way of pronouncing her words with so many more syllables than they really had, but it was what we loved about her.

“Dottie.” I parked the RV at the office building and shoved it into Park. “Just wait a minute.”

If I’d not stopped her, she would have already jumped out and had that cigarette half-smoked before I could even get out with Fifi.

“I’m so glad you found something other than this campground to occupy your time. And if that includes you and Henry entertaining more than just a friendship, I am all for that.” I reached over and touched her hand, the one with the lighter in it. “I know you loved Harrison. But I also know he’d never want you to be alone.”

Dottie had been married to Harrison, a man I’d never met, but I’d met his daughter a while back when she came to visit Dottie.
